History of the Purdue Cancer Benefit

The Cancer Benefit Concert started in 2003 when the experiences of Maggie Kleinhenn and Rachel Custer, now PMO alumni, were inspired to make a difference and help raise money and awareness for cancer research.  Both Maggie and Rachel were personally fighting cancer and wanted to do something…anything to help!  Maggie, herself, was fighting the disease and Rachel was experiencing life with parents battling cancer.  Thus, the Cancer Benefit Concert was formed.

This new tradition began with a goal to entertain, educate and engage family, friends and the community. The ladies, in relationship with the Purdue Center for Cancer Research, entertain by performing a breath-taking concert, educate all on the new cancer research being done, and engage themselves by sharing their inspirational and positive stories.

Each year the Purduettes and the Purdue Center for Cancer Research showcase PMO by providing a Women’s Health Issues forum.  This on-campus event happens in the fall and is open to men and women of all ages.  This is an informal way to share information and ask questions on a variety of women’s issues such as cancer, domestic violence, and mental illness.  The Purduettes and the Purdue Center for Cancer Research also host the annual Cancer Benefit Concert each Spring.  The concert has focused on many types of cancer including breast, childhood, skin and general cancers.  Stories from Purduettes and Purdue Center for Cancer Research researchers are shared with the audience while they reveal their own personal stories, questions and outlooks.

This event offers so much…an entertaining performance by the Purduettes, stories and updates from a variety of speakers, and opportunities to bid on the creative silent auction baskets and items.  The money raised for this event goes to fund a scholarship for a Purduette and a student doing cancer research at the Purdue Center for Cancer Research, alternating each year.  2008 was the first year the scholarship was allocated and Purduette Chelsy Pala was the recipient.

Please join us at the 7th annual Cancer Benefit Concert on April 11th at the University Plaza Hotel in West Lafayette, Indiana.  If you have any questions about the Purdue Cancer Benefit or would like to RSVP, please call Beth Steurer at the Purdue Center for Cancer Research at (765) 494-1109 or email her at steurered@purdue.edu.
